Tongham map project
Created as part of Illustration Masters Degree
Tongham My map is an exploration of the idea of home. It considers the home as a place in time and history and also a sense of being. By exploring elements of architecture and landscape it is about the shapes we recognise as home - the shape of a roof, the crops that are grown etc. Through the lens of the philosopher Walter Benjamin it explores how the home is our place in history. We live in the lung on the left and from this perspective we are able to look backwards in time to the lung on the right and it is from this vantage point we have a clearer sense of our place in the world and some of the elements that might constitute home to us. The key shows how this sense of home may have changed over the centuries changing its focus from the outer locus to the inner locus.
